Adjutant’s Notes

Greetings and Salutation’s my fine unfettered friends. Here’s to hoping the great spring weather continues. If you haven’t been to the V lately, stop by and look at the “new” floors. We had them stripped and waxed and they look great. A head’s up thing, PLEASE come to the District-3 meeting at the Post on Sunday, 3 May, 1 PM. Since we’re hosting it, we’d really like to see all the officer’s there and as many of our members as possible. Heck, it’s only an hour+ of your time, and there’s food too! (a big plus to me)

Just as a reminder, May is full of Veteran’s events going on. Sunday, 10 May is Mother’s Day. A happy Mom’s day to all of our mothers out there in VFW-land (from your FAV son…). Fri, 15 May is Peace Officer Memorial Day, stop and say a prayer for our Police. Sat, 16 May is Armed Forces Day. Thurs, 21 May is our An-nual Post Memorial Service. Please stop by and remember all of our brothers and sisters who have passed in the last year. Mon, 25 May is Memorial Day. Please re-member to say a prayer as we grill out for our fallen. Also, there are three (3) ser-vices and a parade. 0845 ceremony at the Tailgates to the Millrace. 0900 ceremony at the Goshen Courthouse. The parade forms up in front of the GPD afterwards, and steps off at 1015. It’ll go from the GPD north on Main to Pike, then west on Pike to 1st St. Then north on 1st St to Oakridge Cemetery; where there will be a cer-emony there too. Afterwards, everybody is invited back to the V for lunch.

We also have some cool stuff going on in June. Sat, 13 Jun is the Military Stand-down at Oxbow Park, 11 AM to 3 PM. Sat, 20 Jun is the Battle of the Bands, a fundraiser. Please stop by and have a great time (it always is…). Sun, 21 Jun is Father’s Day. A great day to let dad grill out and enjoy the sun and charcoal. Our Post Chaplain Wayne Hawn, host’s a bible study the 3rd Tuesday of the month. I’m sure all of you (not me of course) could use a little “church’n up”.

Whew, that was a lot. Also, if a few people could step-up to the plate and help out w/Bingo, they’d sure appreciate it. Even if you could help out one (1) Friday a month.

As for Trivia this newsletter. On the TV show Emergency. 1) Was there a “real” fireman on the TV show? And 2) Was there a “real” fireman on the TV show?

As always, your Adj, Jeff

Chaplain’s Corner

It seems that we are often anxiously look to the change of season and look to what is ahead of us. As we look forward lets also look after one another and take time to help those around us that may be suffering silently with issues that they are afraid to speak for the fear of appearing vulnerable. There are times that we are all vulnerable and would love to have someone sit and listen without judgement or judgement. I pray that we all would be that someone who cares. I would like to be that person as well, so if you see me at the VFW or even on the street, I will make time for to talk with you.

If you would like to learn more about the bible and enjoy fellowship with other vets and fami-ly, I encourage you to join us every 3rd Tuesday at 5:30 for a bible study here at the VFW.

May GOD bless
Chaplain Wayne

Commander’s Notes

Greetings:

Now that Fall is coming with cooler weather, I hope everyone had a safe and enjoyable summer. With school starting again, we need to be watchful of kids going to and from school.

Coming in October will have the 100th birthday of the VFW 985 Post. More details coming as we get closer.

We continue to have some good food and drink specials each week, so come in and try some.

I again want to thank all our volunteers and we can still use more, so if you some free time we could use you.

Remember our veterans & families and any of our members that are having health problems.

The 3rd District Meeting is Sunday September 11th at 1:00 pm in our VFW Hall, please attend if you can.

Well, that’s all for now.

God Bless America!

Your Commander:

George Buckmaster

P.S. 1st Wednesdays,  House Committee 6:00, Post Officers 7:00 meetings.

 Adjutant’s Notes:

Greetings my fellow VFW’ers and American Legion’ers! Well as summer is almost over, let’ s hope she hangs around for awhile yet… I thought I’d lend an ear to the turning of autumn and the falling of leaves. Don’t worry, we still have some time to spend at the lake or backyard BBQ’s!

I did want to remind everyone about the annual Ride to Remember on Sunday, September 11th. It’s the annual motorcycle ride starting in Elkhart, riding through the county, stopping in Goshen (at the GPD), and then heading out around the county to finish back in Elkhart. The route will be the same, leaving Hoosier Harley around 12:30 PM, and arriving in Goshen around 2:30 PM (give or take). There, a brief ceremony honoring those fallen heroes from the Military, Police and Fire (from Elkhart Co).

On a side-note, that’s also the day for the District-3 meeting here at the V. Please come to one of them!

Since this is a bi-monthly newsletter, I’d be amiss if I didn’t mention the little gooles and goblins running around for Halloween. Please be attentive for the lil critters as they roam around the neighborhoods!

As a last note for this newsletter, remember recruiting and retention is your business too. Our ranks are dropping in numbers every year. As our older members retire from this earth to a better place, we need to refill our ranks. I hate to be nostalgic, but I remember when we had around 850 members in the Post and a bunch in the Aux too.

When you talk to a vet, see if they’re a member of the VFW or American Legion. If not, hand them an application or invite them to stop by for a cool and refreshing beverage! We also need the volunteers to keep the Post going. Some of our own have been burned out and need a break. Even if it’s only once a month helping out – that helps!

Trivia for this months newsletter: With the return of the TV Show the A-Team; 1) in the opening credits, what’s the inside joke for “Face”? 2) What does B.A. stand for (in the name) B.A. Baracus?

As always, your Adj

Jeff Schrock

 Chaplain’s Corner

Greetings to all of our veterans and their families!  Praying for those with health issues and God’s healing touch.

We need to keep our Chaplain John in our prayers as he, himself is having his own health problems.

So please, keep he as a veteran and  our chaplain in our prayers.

In his place:

 Chaplain John A. Alheim

Trivia answers:  1) A Cylon walks by, from Battlestar Galactica. In that TV show, he was Lt Starbuck.

2) Bosco Albert (or Bad Attitude) Baracus

 Auxiliary

Another VFW Post 985 AUXILIARY Golf Outing has come and gone!  What a great year from sponsors, golfers, and the golf committee! Thank you to Jeff, Jan S and Jan V, Katee, Angie, Tammy, Mary, Ana, Robert and Orv! You guys knocked it out of the park! Also, special thanks to Deb and Charlie for doing the dogs! Thanks to all that volunteered at the golf course too! It was a huge success! Also, thanks to those that help at the Post!

Sept 11 is quickly approaching. Please take a moment to remember so many folks that we take for granted every day.  Also on September 11 is the District 3 meeting at our Post. Please come support the District like we support our Post!

We can always use help on the second and third Friday of every month as we provide the meal on those evenings.

Our meetings are the second Wednesday of every month at 7pm. We’ve had several new members join recently and we’d love to see you at a meeting or help with a meal.

Thank you, Veterans!
