Commander’s Notes:

Greetings: As we get into the new year, I hope everyone had a happy, merry, and safe Thanksgiving, Christmas, and New Year and stayed healthy. The winter is about half over, but with more cold and that white stuff to come, please dress warm. We got some of our new chairs delivered with more to come. We still have some good food & drink specials during the week, so come try some when you have the time. Watch for information on future events here at the Post. I want to continue to thank all the volunteers we had this past year and those that continue to help. We need to continue to remember our veterans and their families that have served and are still serving, wherever they are. Until next time. God Bless America!

Your Commander:
George Buckmaster

P.S. Post meetings are now at 4:00 pm on the 2nd Wednesday each month. Please attend if you can!

Adjutant’s Note

Well, now that Christmas and New Year’s are over, we’re headed into the new year with flying colors. Thanks to Jan, Alyena, Beau, and the rest of our VFW folks for making the season a resounding success.

Looking ahead, I’m really waiting on breakfast at the V on the first Saturdays! 8-11, and like the village goat, I try and finish what all you guys leave behind (especially the “leftover” bacon).

Not a whole lot of special stuff in January. However, in February, we do have some extra special stuff going on. Sunday the 2nd, I’m going to spend the day watching Groundhog Day. Friday the 14th is Valentine’s Day—bring your special sweetie to the V.

Please remember to renew your VFW and American Legion memberships. We can’t have this nice a place if we don’t all participate! Also, bring new people in and have them sign up. Over the years—I’ve been here more than 20—we’ve lost lots of our brothers and sisters. I remember when we had, give or take, 900 members for the V. We’re down to somewhere over 200 now. Aside from National, State, and District pushing membership, it’s something we should already be doing anyway. How long can our post remain if we just keep losing members?

Volunteers, volunteers, volunteers… We need some people to step up and help out around the post. The ones we have are great, and huge thanks to them, but we’re burning them out. Please step up once a month to help out.

As you probably know by now, we’re replacing the fluorescent lights with LEDs. Depending on when you get this, the project will hopefully be done. It’ll save on our electric bill every month. The project was paid for by donations—something our post can’t live without. Donating your time, money, and effort builds the post into what it has become. Please don’t misunderstand, we’re not destitute—I’m just a cheap bastard trying to save money wherever I can.

This month’s trivia is on general knowledge:

  1. The Chicago TV news station WGN—what did the original call letters mean?
  2. What was arguably the first “Super Market” in America?

As always,
Your Adj, Jeff

Chaplain’s Corner

Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year to all of you!

Remember, Christmas is not just about gifts—it’s a time to celebrate Jesus’ birth and be with family and friends.

It will soon be a New Year, and to all, Happy New Year! Thank God we made it through another year. May 2025 be an outstanding blessing for all! I will keep you in my prayers.

May God be with you all!
Chaplain John

Auxiliary Notes

As I write this article, we are past Christmas and quickly approaching the new year. With that being said, I hope everyone had a Merry Christmas, and I am wishing everyone a happy and safe 2025.

As the new year approaches, just a reminder that the auxiliary meets on the 2nd Wednesday of the month at 7 PM.

Starting in January, the 2nd Friday will change from Swiss Steak to a spaghetti dinner with bread and a side salad. Also, beginning in January, you will see a slight price increase for the meals on the 2nd and 3rd Friday nights.

Once again, please consider volunteering to either help with a Friday night meal or Bingo—I know that Jan Santos would love to have more help on Fridays.

President
